Lynx have No. 2 pick in draft Monday with eye to future

The Lynx enter Monday’s WNBA draft in a different position with a different philosophy.Minnesota will pick No. 2 — its highest selection in years — and have an eye more toward the future than the immediate future. So while Minnesota’s current roster may look like one that would require a center or a point guard, making next year’s team as competitive as possible isn’t the primary concern. The Lynx are building toward the future.“You pick who is the best available,” ESPN analyst Rebecca Lobo said. “Even if Minnesota doesn’t necessarily have the need for that position this year, if that’s what’s best available, I would expect that’s what they take. And I think it’s also important when you look at teams and drafts, as much as you look at the needs for what they have this year, you also have to look at when contracts expire and what their needs might be in the immediate future.”And that appears to be the approach. Nuggets’ reserves handle Kings, snapping three-game losing streak in regular-season finale

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 15:19:19 GMT

It didn’t matter that the No. 1 seed had long been sealed, or that all of Denver’s normal starters were in street clothes on Sunday afternoon. The Nuggets needed a win, to snap a three-game losing streak, to establish something positive ahead of the postseason, or, at minimum, because fans packed Ball Arena for another sellout crowd. Against the No. 3 seed Kings, who played their starters for the first half, Denver found its mojo again in the regular season finale. The Nuggets’ 109-95 win was an emphatic defensive statement by players who might not see the court in the postseason.Fortunately, the next time Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, Michael Porter Jr. and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope see the floor, the playoffs will be here. Who Denver will face won’t be determined until the end of this week’s play-in tournament. But on Sunday, next week’s opponent was far from their minds. What mattered was erasing the stench of a rotten road trip.Bruce Brown powered the offense with 21 po...
