Anthony Volpe’s 2-run homer, DJ LeMahieu’s walk-off single lead Yankees to 3-2 win over the Blue Jays

Saturday’s pitching duel between the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and the Blue Jays’ Alek Manoah lived up to the hype. But after both starters departed, Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu stole the spotlight.Volpe, a 21-year-old rookie, scored the first runs of the game in the eighth inning when he took a Yimi Garcia fastball the other way and over the right field fence at Yankee Stadium. The two-run home run, the second of Volpe’s young career, gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead after Manoah spent most of the afternoon shoving.A curtain call soon followed, though Aaron Boone and bench coach Carlos Mendoza had to prod the reluctant shortstop, who ultimately clapped at the crowd instead of offering a traditional wave or tip of the helmet.“It was pretty crazy. I didn’t really know what was going on, I guess, and I didn’t want to assume to go out or anything like that,” Volpe said with a smile. “I didn’t even know where to go.”Boone said the...

Natick residents to gather Sunday after swastika found near local MBTA stop

A rabbi at the Chabad Center of Natick is calling on residents in his town to come together Sunday to find peace after police identified a swastika spray painted near the West Natick MBTA station late Thursday.Rabbi Levi Fogelman is asking residents to gather at 10:30 a.m. at Boden Lane Bridge, near where the swastika appeared. The group will then march to the Chabad Center at 10:45 a.m. for a celebration.“The best way to stop darkness is to double our efforts with light and goodness,” Fogelman wrote in a Facebook post Friday. “We take control of our response with acts of positivity and pride. When negativity sees that all they accomplished was to strengthen us even more, it will lose.”The Natick Police Department is investigating the incident and has increased presence in the area of the commuter rail stop, Fogelman said. One resident took quick action by covering the image up with chalk, writing “Hate has no place here.”Anti-Semitic reported incidents have been on the rise across M...

Dighton-Rehoboth softball ends tough week at 2-2

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:24:48 GMT

DIGHTON — If ever there was a must-win game in April, Saturday was it for the Dighton-Rehoboth softball team. After a win over Bourne, vacation week was shaping up as a potential disaster for the Falcons with consecutive lopsided losses to South Coast Conference wagons Case and Apponequet. Falcons’ head coach Katie Holmes didn’t want to see her squad lose three in a row and give up ground in the SCC.The Falcons have been stinging the ball so far this spring, then registered a satisfying 3-2 win Saturday over non-league opponent Bishop Feehan using some timely hitting and solid pitching from Hannah Carey and Kylie Hillier. Morgan Corey continued her torrid hitting with a single, double and an RBI for Dighton-Rehoboth while Caleigh Cloonan and Emma Horrocks both knocked in runs for the 6-3 Falcons. The win evened Dighton-Rehoboth’s record to 2-2 for the week and a shot of momentum going forward.“It was a tough schedule for us this week but to end it this way I th...

Celtics continue to emphasize rebounding after ‘lack of effort’ in Game 3

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:24:48 GMT

ATLANTA — Before Robert Williams walked over to meet reporters at the Celtics’ team hotel on Saturday, Joe Mazzulla apparently had a quick message for him.“Yeah, get a MF’n rebound,” Williams said. “Yeah, get a rebound.”It was further evidence that rebounding remains the Celtics’ No. 1 emphasis as their first-round series against the Hawks continues. The message was as important as ever just hours after their Game 3 loss on Friday night, when the Hawks crushed the Celtics on the glass with a 48-29 rebounding edge.Williams didn’t mince words on why that happened.“Honestly just a team lack of effort,” Williams said. “Can’t really blame it on anything. Rebounding is all effort, all physicality. 50/50 balls, you know, just looking to step that up. …“I feel like they’re putting an emphasis on physicality, which they’ve been beating us this whole series, if you ask me,” Williams added. “And it’s something we’ve been putting an emphasis on.”The Hawks didn’t miss much on Friday – they finis...

Sinking Twins blown out by Nationals

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:24:48 GMT

The Twins are in something of a tailspin.Despite starting Saturday a half-game up on second-place Cleveland in the American League Central, Minnesota has been playing its worst baseball of the young season. After blowing a late lead against the Washington Nationals on Friday, the Twins were blown out by the last-place team in the National League Central on Saturday, 10-4.The pitching was weak, the at-bats were erratic and the defense was suspect. Since winning the opening two games of a four-game series at Yankee Stadium last week, the Twins have lost six of seven.Joey Meneses drove in a pair of runs with a double and sacrifice fly against Twins starter Pablo López (1-2), and CJ Abrams added a three-run homer off reliever Simeon Woods-Richardson in the seventh inning. With the victory, Washington clinched its first series win of the season.Byron Buxton homered, and Trevor Larnach hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to cut the Nationals’ lead to 8-4.
