MILAN (AP) — The Italian city of Venice announced new limits Saturday on the size of tourist groups, the latest move to reduce the pressure of mass tourism on the famed canal city.Starting in June, groups will be limited to 25 people, or roughly half the capacity of a tourist bus, and the use of loudspeakers, “which can generate confusion and disturbances,” will be banned, the city said in a statement. The city official charged with security, Elisabetta Pesce, said the policies were aimed at improving the movement of groups through Venice’s historic center as well as the heavily visited islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. The city previously announced plans to test a new day-tripper fee this year. The 5 euros ($5.45) per person fee will be applied on 29 peak days between April and mid-July, including most weekends. It is intended to regulate crowds, encourage longer visits and improve the quality of life for Venice residents. The U.N. cultural agency cited tourism’s impact o...

LUTON, England (AP) — Cole Palmer scored two goals and Chelsea survived a late fightback to beat Luton 3-2 in the Premier League on Saturday. The England forward struck in each half at Kenilworth Road and provided the assist as Noni Madueke also got on the scoresheet. But late goals from Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo set up a nervy finish for manager Mauricio Pochettino’s team as Luton threatened an unlikely comeback. Chelsea has now won back-to-back games in the league for the first time since October, in what has been a troubled first season in charge for Pochettino. The win also ended a run of four straight defeats away from home. Palmer has been a rare highlight for the London team since his move from Manchester City in the offseason. He has now scored eight goals in 16 league games for Chelsea.Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Wednesday and got off to a good start at Luton when Palmer opened the scoring in the 12th.

Serbia election protests mount in Belgrade

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:19:54 GMT

BELGRADE, Serbia — Tens of thousands gathered in central Belgrade on Saturday in one of the largest protests since the Serbian election two weeks ago, united in their charges of vote fraud and in urging the EU to take serious note of unfolding events in the country.“I want to invite our friends from Europe to pay more attention to what’s happening here,” Srđan Cvijić, a member of the Belgrade Center for Security Policy who was an election monitor in the December 17 vote, told those gathered around the capital’s Terazije fountain Saturday. He decried the fact that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who often boasts of his close relationship to EU and Western officials, only promotes European values and “hangs up EU flags” when officials from Brussels and foreign dignitaries pay the country a visit.Vučić has for years skillfully navigated the tightrope between the West and Russia, often turning to the latter to bolster nationalist support. The Turkish Super Cup football final to be played in Saudi Arabia on Friday was canceled after a dispute with Saudi authorities over the players’ shirts, according to media reports. The match between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe was scheduled for Friday evening in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, but it had to be postponed over what the clubs described as “some problems” in the event’s organization, according to the reports.Habertürk television and other media said the Fenerbahce and Galatasaray players wanted to wear T-shirts featuring the image of the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, during the prematch warm-up, but were not authorized to do so by Saudi organizers, according to the Associated Press. The players insisted on the T-shirts because 2023 marks the centennial of the proclamation of the Turkish Republic by Atatürk, according to the reports.
